He attempts to show how these core elements inevitably exert an important influence on pupils' personal and social development. The author hopes that the book will help students and more experienced teachers to incorporate and apply in their day-to-day work an understanding of welfare issues in the broadest sense and to develop basic counselling skills in working with children, parents and their own colleagues. It is aimed at both teacher training students and in-service teachers wishing to improve their teaching skills. The series as a whole aims to produce "easy to read", practical guides to provide the necessary subject background, supported by references to encourage and guide further reading together with questions and/or exercises devised to assist application and evaluation.
