In all its various manifestations - including theatre, engravings, ballet, riots, fiction, carnival, propaganda and lifestyle choice - cross-dressing held a profoundly ambivalent position within the literature, culture and history of seventeenth-century France.

This study combines a range of literary, theoretical, cultural and historical approaches to offer the first comprehensive exploration of the phenomenon in the period.
