The first study dedicated solely to the culture of Eastern Tibet, the cradle of Tibetan culture. The thoroughly researched text is the result of fieldwork conducted by both authors over a period of several years. The brilliant and inspiring images
The wild regions of east Tibet, historically known as Kham (home of the famed warrior monks) and Amdo (birhplace of the current Dalai Lama), are now incorporated into the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan. In spite of their historical importance, they are far less studied than the western and central Tibetan regions. Yet eastern Tibet remains home to a larger population of Tibetans than does the so-called Tibetan Autonomous Region. The present volume redresses the balance in providing both a vivid photographic record of the peoples and spectacular geography of the region, and an erudite description of the rich traditional culture that has been preserved by the region's inhabitants, without which our knowledge of Tibet remains incomplete.
