The Iliad is an epic poem attributed to the ancient Greek writer Homer. The story, set during the Trojan War, begins when Agamemnon refuses to return Chryseis to her father, angering the gods. When he is forced to release her, he takes Briseis instead, angering Achilles and leading him to refuse to fight

Homer is the legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey (the two epic poems that are the foundational works of ancient Greek literature) is attributed. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential authors of all time. For example, in Dante's Divine Comedy, Virgil refers to him as "Poet sovereign", king of all poets; in the preface to his translation of the Iliad, Alexander Pope acknowledges that Homer has always been considered the "greatest of poets.
