The empire s drainage system was no longer working, and there were frequent floods and storms. The serfs basic agricultural tools were picks, forks, spades, rakes, and balanced sickles.#4 The medieval period was a time of great bloodshed and violence, but also a time of great Christianity. Medieval Christians, knowing the other cheek would be bloodied, did not turn it. Death was the prescribed penalty for hundreds of offenses, particularly those against property.
