Roman People provides students of antiquity with rich, fully realized accounts of ancient Romans, emphasizing who they were and how they viewed the world. General background information is provided to ground each personality within historical context; however, the main focus of the text is an examination of key figures and their experiences.

Both well-known and everyday individuals are presented, providing readers with a balanced and nuanced representation of Roman life. The text is organized chronologically beginning in 753 B.C. and concluding with the fall of the Roman Empire in 1453.

The fifth edition features full-color photos and maps, new images throughout, "Reel History" boxes that examine how Hollywood has portrayed Rome and Roman people in film, greater emphasis on Roman women, and expanded coverage of gladiators, charioteers, and the Roman circus. New boxes throughout the text provide insights into the Roman experience in Spain, the life of a Roman senior centurion, and the latest information about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii.

Roman People is part of the Cognella Antiquity Series, a collection of textbooks that explore the emergence and development of ancient civilizations. The books examine how ancient ideas, empires, social structures, art, literature, and religious beliefs emerged in response to the challenges faced by ancient people as their worlds expanded and changed.

Robert B. Kebric was a senior professor of history at the University of Louisville, where he taught and wrote extensively on ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian history, the history of the Olympic Games, history and film, and humanities. He received a M.A. and Ph.D. from Binghamton University in New York.
