An accessible illustrated introduction to the history of sites located across the iconic location of Hadrian's Wall.
Andrew Tibbs, the man behind the popular @RomanScotland account, brings together an overview of the history and archaeology of this famous monument, along with a guide to the key Roman sites to visit in and around Hadrian’s Wall. The history of the wall starts with the earliest Roman invasion of northern Britain. This led to the construction of the Stanegate, a chain of forts across northern England superseded by the construction of Hadrian’s Wall.

Thirty key sites are examined, all of which can be visited, and Tibbs provides maps, illustrations and details of each of these. This is the perfect book for anybody interested in the history of the wall and the rich variety of interesting sites that can be found along it.

Dr Andrew Tibbs is an archaeologist and historian specialising in Roman and Iron Age Britain, and an Honorary Research Fellow in Archaeology with Durham University. Having started on his first archaeological excavation at 14, Andrew has a long-standing interest in archaeology, undertaking a Masters degree from Reading University, before undertaking a PhD from Durham University. He is an elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Andrew’s work has been widely published, with his first book, Beyond the Empire: A Guide to the Roman Remains in Scotland, released in 2019 and will be revised and updated in 2024. His other books include A Short Guide to Hadrian’s Wall (2022), The Final Frontier: Scotland's Early Roman Landscape (2024), and A Short Guide to Roman London (due spring 2024). He runs the popular @RomanScotland Twitter account and has contributed to various History Hit podcasts, as well as television programmes.
