Archäologie in Lübeck 2019

Mit der Zeitschrift „Archäologie in Lübeck“ erscheint mit diesem Heft zum Jahr 2019 der erste Band einer neuen Reihe, die als Jahresschrift der Abteilung Archäologie der Hansestadt Lübeck jährlich über die wichtigsten Ausgrabungen, Ergebnisse, aktuellen Projekte und Forschungen berichtet. Großformatig und bunt bebildert zeigt die Lübecker Archäologie in dieser Jahresschriftenreihe ihre Einblicke in die faszinierende Arbeitswelt zwischen mittelalterlicher Großstadt und vorgeschichtlicher Ostseeküste. Es werden sowohl die Grabungen aus dem UNESCO Weltkulturerbe Lübecker Altstadt als auch die in dem die Stadt umgebenden Landgebiet vorgestellt – von der Steinzeit über das Mittelalter bis in die Neuzeit. Herausragend im Jahr 2019 waren beispielsweise die Ausgrabungen in einem mittelalterlichen Quartier an der Fischstraße und am Ellerbrook, das zwischen Kaufleuten und Bierbrauern neue Erkenntnisse über die Stadtwerdung im nördlichen Teil der Altstadt erbrachte. Daneben erfolgten erstmals großangelegte Ausgrabungen in dem noch heute als Rundling bestehenden Dorfes Kronsforde. Hier fanden sich vom Feuersteinbeil bis zum frühneuzeitlichen Bohlenweg Hinweise und Spuren auf eine lange Siedlungstradition, die so erstmals begonnen wurde untersucht zu werden. Aus der aktuellen Arbeit herauszuheben sind zudem die Forschungen an der Lübecker Synagoge, deren Geschichte sich von einem Ritterhof zu einem Gebetshaus entwickelte. Daneben treten Untersuchungen zu Paternosterperlen aus der Lübecker Innenstadt, die aus dem Gold der Ostsee gefertigt wurden: Bernstein.

This volume, for the year 2019, is the first issue of the journal “Archaeology in Lübeck”, a new series that will serve as an annual publication for the Archaeology section of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and report on the most significant excavations, results, current projects and research. In a large format and with colour images, this new series of yearly publications provides insights into our fascinating archaeological investigations, covering a range of topics from the medieval city to the prehistoric Baltic coast.
We present excavations from within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, as well as from the rural areas surrounding the city – and covering all periods from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages and Early Modern times. In 2019, outstanding archaeological excavations were for example carried out in a medieval quarter in the Fischstraße and along the Ellerbrook, which harboured traders and brewers. They have provided new insights into urbanisation processes in the northern part of the old town. In addition, the first large-scale excavations in the village of Kronsforde, which still preserves its characteristic Rundling structure, have been carried out. From flint axes to early modern wooden trackways, these investigations have yielded traces of a long settlement tradition which could be investigated for the first time. Further current work that deserves highlighting includes research on the Lübeck synagogue, which developed from a knightly residence to a prayer house. Another contribution covers paternoster beads from Lübeck’s old town, made from amber, the gold of the Baltic.
