An entertaining and thought-provoking history of Dublin that will also offer information to the tourist on the ground.
Few cities exist as clearly in the mind as Dublin, evoking as it does such powerful images which personify the spirit and consciousness of the whole nation. In 1988 Dublin celebrated its official millennium, although there were settlements on the city's site well before 988. The Traveller's History of Dublin traces chronologically the history of Molly Malone's 'fair city' from its earliest pre-Viking beginnings to the present day. Now a compact, engaging and vibrant city that has assumed a totally new dynamic - light years away from the squalor of the 19th century when the death rate was comparable to Calcutta. A city that inspired Yeats and James Joyce, that was home to many immigrants and to Dublin's notorious travellers or 'tinkers'. A special chapter covers the history of Sinn Fein which began its struggle in Dublin in 1905. It will also have practical information for visitors: listing tourist sites and museums and galleries (with a section devoted to places of particular interest to children).

Teresa Geraghty comes from the Irish Republic, but currently lives and works in North London. She achieved a First Class Honours degree in Irish Studies and History. She is a keen observer of the Irish scene and knows Dublin well. A Windrush Press Book
