Thorsten Schäffer ist ordinierter Zen-Mönch in der Linie von Meister Taisen Deshimaru, der Zen in den 70er Jahren von Japan nach Europa brachte. Mit 12 Jahren beschäftigte ihn intensiv die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens und dem Sinn unserer menschlichen Existenz. Mit 33 Jahren empfing er die Gebote und die Bodhisattva Ordination von seinem Lehrer Zen-Meister Roland Yuno Rech und erhielt seinen buddhistischen Namen "Heisan", was soviel wie Berg des Friedens bedeutet. Mit 38 Jahren empfing er die Mönchs-Ordination im ältesten Zen-Tempel Europas La Gendronnière in Frankreich und begann seinerseits die Praxis zu verbreiten und seine Erfahrungen mit anderen zu teilen. Er ist Autor verschiedener Bücher, Familienvater und gibt einen sehr direkten und unorthodoxen Zen-Weg an Interessierte weiter.
