CHAPTER 2
Prophecy Versus Tongues
We have made it clear that many prophesy but not everyone who prophesies is a Prophet by calling. Having made that clear, it is important to delve into more truths of the scripture where we can differentiate the gift of prophecy from the gift of tongues.
PROPHECY VERSUS TONGUES
You may find it alarming to read the message of Paul in the scriptures below where he gave special credence to the Gift of Prophecy in I Corinthians 14:5, "Greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues".
The gift of prophecy has a vast difference from the gifts of tongues. The gift of prophecy is directed towards corporate edification but speaking in tongues is focused on individual edification. In the context of edifying the Church in a congregation, the gift of prophecy is more potent but in the context of edifying yourself in a congregation, the gifts of speaking in tongues is empowering.
When attempting to edify the Church in a congregation, the gifts of diverse kinds of tongues becomes effective when accompanied by the gift of interpretation of tongues. It's not a translation of tongues so it may not be word for word, you may have a long diverse kinds of tongues in operation but have a short interpretation because it is more about telling what the tongue is saying. Whenever speaking in tongues is accompanied by interpretation of tongues, it becomes prophecy.
To bring it home directly, ‘Prophecy’ is inspired utterance in a known tongue whereas ‘Speaking in tongues’ on its own without interpretation of tongues is inspired utterance in an unknown tongue. The scriptures in First Corinthians asks us to desire spiritual gifts as well as to prophesy but it did not ask everyone to seek the calling into the Office of a Prophet, because prophesying does not guarantee the Call of a Prophet.
Throughout my years in ministry I have had so many people coming to me to ask, ‘How do I confirm that this is a genuine prophetic word of God?’ The answer for you to identify a fake item is you must know what the real should look like.
To further enlighten you, we shall be identifying the purpose of God for the prophetic ministry; either operating as a gift of prophecy or as a ministry of the prophetic. Many people have formed the habit of looking for innocent or weak looking believers all over the place, either in church, by telephone or via social media and slam the word on them, “Thus saith the Lord to you..,” “God sent me to tell you,” “I have a word for you and you have no choice in this,'' etc. This has become so rampant and it leads many people to be more confused than they were before they received the prophecy.
Some people get scary prophecies while some others get sweet ones that never come to fruition and they are full of doubt about the promise of God for their lives.
I Corinthians 14:1-4
“Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.”.
In the entire chapter above, we see the clarification of the gift of prophecy as it relates to the Church. The prophetic gift is a much-desired gift that is profitable to every Christian believer in order to fully direct and navigate the journeys of their lives. The Bible instructs that we should follow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but operating in the gift of prophecy is a life saver. The scriptures begin to draw a distinction between the gifts of diverse tongues and the gifts of prophecy. It admits that the gift of speaking in tongues is an efficacious weapon that works mysteries and links us directly to God. How amazing to speak directly to God unhindered and uninterrupted? It also emphasizes that speaking in tongues unleashes mysteries. What are mysteries? Mysteries are heavenly codes that need to be unveiled, decoded and downloaded by divine revelation and access. So, whenever you speak in tongues you are decoding realms that your mundane and mortal mind cannot fathom or imagine.
It is imperative to know that when it begins to speak about the prophetic ministry, it specifically says, when you prophesy you “speak unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort”.
We need to separate these two scenarios in order to understand what the scripture says. Here the scripture is painting the picture of a believer who speaks in tongues and he says, he speaks to God directly mysteries but that the one who prophesies speaks to people. What is the purpose of prophecy? It is simply to speak to men words of edification, exhortation and comfort, hallelujah.
Whenever you are in Church, it is important to identify who the object of your speech is. Once that is clear, you have clarity and you can choose whether to prophesy if you need to edify, exhort or comfort the church or whether to speak in tongues if you need to declare mysteries that turns the devil mad and bring his camp into confusion through mysteries.
Prophecy is a powered utterance in human language which is directed to men. God does not need us to prophesy to Him, we can speak in tongues to Him but the prophecy comes from God in the first place and the only way it will make sense is if it is downloaded in a reasonable, fathomable understanding to the hearer so that the supernatural message is transmitted effectively.
The word edify could be interpreted to mean: to enlighten, uplift, energize, power up or charge. This means every prophecy that you receive from God is supposed to power you up. The prophetic word of revelation that should jump into your spirit should bring you so much power and energy that you can take on every demon and bring them to their knees. I have read several studies that describe the word edify as similar to “charging of a battery” or to “build up”. Note that both speaking in tongues and prophecy edify, they are just directed at different benefactors of the charge. When you speak in tongues, your battery gets charged but when you prophesy, the Church battery gets charged.
To exhort means a process of making a strong appeal or urge to act. Another meaning of exhort is to beckon or call near. This implies that prophecy must be beckoning man towards God. Any prophecy that is directly from God should glorify God and not men. When we glorify God, we are directing people towards the will of the Father as well as towards His pleasure.
The third assignment of prophecy towards the Church is to comfort. Hallelujah. That tallies nicely with the ministry of the Holy Spirit as we discussed in the earlier verses. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter and if He is releasing a prophetic word to His Church and people, it would definitely carry the same presence of comfort. The prophecy that is being declared carries the personality of the sender of that prophecy. If the prophecy comes with lies, then it carries the personality of the father of lies which is the devil and if the prophecy carries comfort, then it comes from the spirit of truth; the third person in the Trinity, the Holy Spirit of God. Most times when the revelational part of the prophetic comes up, it usually will not just be the gift of prophecy in operation. It is usually mixed with the manifestation of other gifts such as word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discerning of spirits or otherwise.
CAN I SPEAK IN TONGUES IN THE CONGREGATION?
I Corinthians 14:4-6
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?”
As important as it is to know that both speaking in tongues and prophecy are supernatural utterances of revelation (except that one is in the natural language while the other is in the unknown language) it is critical to remember that the edification of the church comes through a known tongue. The Bible says above that Paul would rather prophesy when it comes to the context of edifying the Church, because if it is just speaking in tongues, it edifies only the individual. The provision in that verse however is that, if there is an interpretation of tongues gift accompanying the tongues, then it brings it to the same edification level of prophecy.
Many people misinterpret this scripture to mean that you must not speak in tongues in the Church however this is not what it implies. Observe verse six, “if I come to you speaking...
