The volume gets to the bottom of epoch-spanning myths targeting women in order to trace male parameters that take hold in many areas of life, for instance, role assignments, categorizations and exclusions that, under the cloak of biology or absolute truth, prejudice the development of an autonomous female identity. The (re)shaping process, which subordinates the (female) body to a regulation of social discipline, classification and hierarchization techniques which integrate themselves into a system of (self)control is exemplified by reference to the sociological, philosophical, theological, educational, medical, legal and literary discourse. It is shown, using selected examples that start in antiquity and lead into the 21st century, which forms and/or dimensions the structural/symbolic violence can take and to what extent it can regulate the female sphere of action.
