(This is 2nd in a series of white papers intended to clarify Jesus & the history that created him to a world yet to meet the REAL Jesus.)
An atheist? Offering a defense of ‘God’? As some kind of ‘ideal’ parent? A new form of rhetorical & written abuse for God & hence, religion? A cosmic comic routine gone bad?
While the history of religious people offers its own colorful & harm-filled argument as to the ultimate suitability of religion to define, much less defend ‘God’, the arguments for & against the existence of God have none the less run from respectable to the downright libelous & unpatriotic.
But I assure you, I am sincere in my motive & my own integrity demands I honor you no less than I would honor myself. My fruits offered here will come to speak for themselves.
Generally, there are three mainline accepted arguments for the existence of God.
Today, however, Jewish history is revealing a jealously kept secret, hidden in plain sight for 2000 years… There is a more compelling, human accessible &rational defense for the existence of God, built right into Jewish history itself. Offering its own unparalleled logic, rationale & processes. In this there is now a fourth argument for the existence of God, but the revealed rationale, spanning 4,000 years & involving three specific individuals, is of such a specific pattern of sociologically significant social development, that interpreted in its natural religious narrative, as its own history would support, but more importantly, even from a secular point of reference for interpretation, the social value, to the Jewish people & to the world, even to this very day, remains the same for both, religiously inclined or not.
There are thus three main reasons why I MUST then defend this history to the public. First, there is the fact that to date, no one else has made this discovery, though I tried unsuccessfully to get others interested in my earliest research &the implied suspicions. Hence, I owe it to myself to act as the original discoverer.
Placed into such a position of discovery, naturally I sought to try to share my evolving suspicions about the ’meaning’ of the research but I was met with everything from derision to scorn to outright hostility. Thus, though I wanted this to be a community development, I was so shamed that I quickly realized I was alone.
This social response to my research, from my own religious community, led to my accepting that while I found no fault with certain aspects of the religious enterprise, namely its proper concern about human morality, I was now also concerned that people themselves no longer, if they ever, truly had ‘faith’ in God. Certainly not from the perspective of the Jewish tradition WITH God. Faith originally meaning we ‘walked with God’, but later ‘in how we walked with each other’, as ‘God’ brought into focus with Moses.
The personal impact was my withdrawing from my religious association, because the people themselves were not the community I now thought I needed to be a part of. If family was NOT family, then community was NOT community. If it is based upon a declared & insisted upon theology focused upon ‘God’ as its totality of focus, then I am now bereft the reason to remain. For it was in the “verbal witness’ others had about their experience of God that I suspended my own doubts about God & acted ‘as if’. Now, those reasons held no sway.
Because Jesus taught me genuine faith is about what I offer others, not what I keep for myself
For in our theology, as with Jesus, EVERYTHING WAS ABOUT THE VALUES LIVED… WITH EACH OTHER. HENCE, IF THE PERPORTED GLUE TO COMMUNITY WAS OR ARE THE VALUES OF COMMUNITY AS THEY ARE ENGAGED WITH EACH OTHER, BUT GOD IS NOT EVIDENT IN THE VALUES AS THEY IMPACT OTHERS, AS JESUS & WE WERE TAUGHT, THEN THE ‘GOD’ QUESTION DOES NOT COMES FOREFRONT.
How is God evident? In OUR behaviors where we act as the ‘true’ children of God… but today, I observe & experience a different witness.
God DOES NOT MATTER… EXCEPT IN CERTAIN WAYS. Yet… “be ye therefore…” was the mantra offered by Jesus to insure relationship TO God.
Apparently, ‘we’ DON’T REALLY care about God… because we can’t bring ourselves to care about ‘others’. So, those who witness to God in their words, then defy those words in such deeds? There is at least a false witness. When I offered this research had powerful implications for the whole God/Jesus argument our founder had advanced, I was treated as a traitor… for imagining myself as worthy for discovering such material others would need to consider.
THEIR God would NEVER IMAGINE USING SOMEONE LIKE ME…
Really?
So, I had no God.
BUT… what the founder taught ABOUT Jesus did ring true, God or no God. What Jesus taught did ring true… about human need. But in HIS terms, not what passes for a ‘Jesus’ today.
Jesus & the founder both advocated that the focus of humanity was on the wrong issues… not power, not politics, not economics. But rather, the whole issue & need for religion arose because of the quality of values chosen for integration into interpersonal relationships humanity was willing to employ with each other, as the foundation for integration & participation in ‘beloved community’.
Hence, though I could not support a faith ‘in’ God anymore, the greater challenge remained the same… & the solution offered by history remained the same… &is just as rational &viable today as when the words were first uttered.
Thus, I owed it to myself then to carry the banner of what history revealed to me, to others, as their rightful inheritance, even if it no longer worked for me personally. For if history offers its own rationale for & rationally accessible defense of the existence of God, & I am a person of integrity… then I share with others what might be of profit to them. Even if it is of no profit to me. Even if they be my enemy.
This leads to my third reason for offering to humanity support for beliefs I cannot personally support. The ‘God’ that history now jealously reveals is the ONLY God that makes ANY GENUINE SENSE to me, given human history. THAT God is now rationally accessible to the least educated, the least interested in theology & such issues, with the least amount of mythology & human imagination attached to it.
Jewish history presents ‘God’… without human interpretation & additions. As an atheist who observes every kind & quality of mindless & immoral aspects attributed to God & those ‘social agents’ employed by God, Jewish history offers an objective overview of some culturally &sociologically significant activity that MUST BE ACCOUNTED FOR. Given the religious nature & narrative of Jewish history, this then falls upon one ‘God’ as the social agent we must consider in the context of the development of that particular history.
THIS history reveals a quality to God that not only makes rational sense, it also fits human history & need perfectly. Jewish history is the culmination of a directed effort of a specific quality, for a specific purpose. God, in this developing revelation of self & purpose, becomes a rationally accessible possible source social agent. If that is so & rationally significant to the human moral need for social evolution, then the ‘God’ argument serves EXACTLY the same purpose that a mere secular interpretation of that same history would reveal, as we will discover is the case. We find Jewish history OFFERS THE SAME MORAL NARRATIVE TO HUMANITY, AS A RELIGIOUS STORY, OR AS A STORY OF A SOCIAL EVOLUTION.
In this new Jewish narrative, God now ‘matters’ to us… because God appears in history as rationally accessible & personally &potentially significant to us, individually & collectively. How so? Each person is then allowed their own processes of interpretation, but an interpretation that history itself defines the parameters of. History now speaks for itself, thank you. God or social evolution, we must decide, but as a rational act, not one based upon emotional need or fears. The ‘God’ of history is revealed as the most intimate of social actors… a ‘parent’.
In this, as a revelator, I am thus merely its communication medium.
