An expanded and extended dugout is still a very prominent vessel amongst traditional fisheries at the coast of Myanmar, whether as a small fishing boat or as underbody for larger ‘ships’. A description of this watercraft can be presented as a result of four research trips carried out between 2004 and 2011. The focus lies on the description of the expanded and extended dugout known as Hlei, especially the constructional changes and usage of this fishing vessel. Is it possible to show the transition from the ancient small fishing boat to a modern, very functionally designed wooden watercraft? Additionally, an overview of the diversity of types within traditional boatbuilding at Myanmar’s coasts and – to a certain extent – rivers shall be provided.
