Meearmeear Traditions

In his position of secretary to Lewis Cass, the governor of Michigan Territory, C. Trowbridge negotiated treaties, served as interpreter, and wrote reports on the customs of the Miami, Menominee, Shawnee, and Wyandot tribes. He wrote the manuscript entitled Meearmeear Traditions (meearmeear being a transliteration of “Miami”) in the early 1820s;
