This book explains why cognitive linguistics offers a plausible theoretical framework for a systematic and unified analysis of the syntax and semantics of particle verbs. It explores the meaning of the verb + particle syntax, the particle placement of transitive particle verbs, how particle placement is related to idiomaticity, and the relationship between idiomaticity and semantic extension. It also offers valuable linguistic implications for future studies on complex linguistic constructions using a cognitive linguistic approach, as well as insightful practical implications for the learning and teaching of English particle verbs.

Dr. Han Luo received a PhD in Foreign Language Education, with a specialization in the teaching of Chinese, from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011, and a PhD in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2007. Her research interests include cognitive linguistics, Chinese linguistics, second language acquisition, foreign language anxiety, heritage language education, telecollaboration, and Chinese language pedagogy. Dr. Luo is the recipient of the 2017 Action Research Award and the 2014 Peking University Press Publication Award presented by the Chinese Language Teachers Association, U.S.A. She is currently teaching at Lafayette College, U.S.A.. Before she joined Lafayette, she worked as a lecturer of Chinese at Northwestern University in the U.S. for three years and taught English and linguistics at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing for six years.
