She has conducted and published many studies in the area of substance abuse. Formerly an alcohol treatment counselor in New York City and former cochair of the Social Work Section of the International Council on Alcohol and Addictions, An-Pyng Sun is an editorial board member of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions.

Current research suggests that biology, psychology, culture, and social standing all contribute to alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems in women, yet few books show how to account for these factors during evaluation and treatment.
