Servicemen posted overseas during the Second World War to far-flung parts of the then British Empire were considered the lucky ones. It was presumed that their war was 'a piece of cake'. This memoir by an RAF mechanic tells a different tale, as, although not on the front line, life abroad was not all plain sailing.

Born in Lincolnshire, Harold Bonnett spent his working life on the railways, and retired from a managerial position at the Old GWR at Paddington. He is a recognised authority on steam engines, having written extensively on the subject. Saga on the Steam Plough, originally published by Allen and Unwin, was reprinted by David and Charles. He has given many talks on TV and radio about steam. He lives in Rake, near Liss, Hampshire.
