The subject of war, peace and social change - an essential one in the study of 20th-century European history - gives rise to many debates. These can be followed in the writings of historians but they should also be studied from the primary sources. Reproduced here is a collection of extracts from diaries, social surveys, acts of parliament, international treaties, novels and poems, newspaper reports, and texts taken from many different countries.
