Presents opposite viewpoints by two philosophers who debate - was the Big Bang with which the universe began created by God, or did it occur without cause? The arguments are based on Einstein's theory of relativity, and include a discussion of the new quantum cosmology developed by Stephen Hawking.
Contemporary science presents the theory that the universe began to exist about 15 billion years ago with a cataclysmic explosion called "the Big Bang". But was the Big Bang created (by God), or did it occur without cause? In this book two philosophers of the opposite viewpoints debate the question. Their arguments are based on Einstein's theory of relativity, and include a discussion of the new quantum cosmology recently developed by Stephen Hawking in "A Brief History of Time".

Part 1 The theistic cosmological argument: the finitude of the past and the existence of God, William Lane Craig; infinity and the past, Quentin Smith; time and infinity, William Lane Craig; the uncaused beginning of the universe, Quentin Smith; the caused beginning of the universe, William Lane Craig; a criticism of a posteriori and a priori - arguments for a cause of the Big Bang singularity, Quentin Smith. Part 2 The atheistic cosmological argument: atheism, theism and Big Bang cosmology, Quentin Smith; theism and Big Bang cosmology, William Lane Craig; a defence of the cosmological argument for God's non-existence, Quentin Smith; a criticism of the cosmological argument for God's non-existence, William Lane Craig. Part 3 Theism, atheism and Hawking's quantum cosmology: "what place, then, for a creator?" - Hawking on God and Creation, William Lane Craig; the wave function of a Godless universe, Quentin Smith.
