Famine moves a Greenlandic family into a new settlement in the 1850’s where the joys and tragedies of pre-Christian times are depicted
Tuumarsi is a realistic depiction of the struggle for survival. A famine causes a family to pick up and relocate to fairer hunting grounds. The psyche and humor of the people is reflected through Nielsen’s own experiences with them. The struggle among the settlement members to make their lives better illustrates what was to become Greenland’s desire for sovereignty from Denmark.

FREDERIK NIELSEN (1905-1991) grew up in a settlement in Greenland. After studying to become a catechist, Nielsen began the first training course for Danish teachers in Greenland in the mid-1930s. Later, he ran Greenland Broadcasting and completed well-regarded translations and important works of fiction and poetry. TORBEN HUTCHINGS is part Danish and based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He gave up a career in chemistry to work as a freelance translator and run a small market stall.
