This involved the evangelical and Benthamite "Science of the poor", socialist "social science" and the middle-class urban statistical movement. Tracing its later takeover by professional men and philanthropic women and tracking the shift of "social science" into the university world, the book raises issues about social science in the construction and challenge of power relations.
