Mostly fact but with a sprinkling of fiction this memoir covers life on a farm in the 1950's as seen through the eyes of a 13-year-old-girl. Just after the war, farm hands were scarce and everyone from the youngest down had to muck in.

Elizabeth Dye, a biologist and author of several books for children, has had an enduring interest in the natural world, particularly plant life and the flora and fauna of the British Isles. This interest began with her childhood experiences of growing up on a farm in Essex. After her children left home, the sad early death of her husband and her reitrement from teaching, she pursued with vigour her many interest that include painting, writing and support for her local church and horticultural society.
