New text, drawings and photography describe the history and restoration of the Pitstone Windmill, and introduce the reader to some of the people who saved it from oblivion. The structure and workings of the mill are described more clearly than ever with three-dimensional drawings.
Four hundred years ago windmills could be seen almost anywhere in England, but with the invention of the steam engine the windmill became obsolete. One by one they were abandoned. Many fell into ruin and were demolished, and soon a surviving windmill became something unusual in the landscape.Pitstone Windmill is one of a minority that did survive, thanks to swift remedial action by the National Trust, the vigilance of one man, and the hard work of a group of volunteers. It is now acclaimed as the oldest dated windmill in England. However, although it has been written about and referred to countless times in many publications, this is the first book exclusively about this mill to be published since the original 1972 booklet Pitstone Windmill.Pitstone Windmill - The Rescue of an Ancient Landmark brings together new text, drawings and photography to describe the history and restoration of the mill, and introduces the reader to some of the people who saved it from oblivion. In addition, the structure and workings of the mill are described more clearly than ever before, thanks to John Brandrick's stunning three-dimensional drawings.

David Wray was a founder member and, for many years, the chair of Pitstone Windmill Restoration Committee. A skilled artist, draughtsman, carpenter and modelmaker, he wrote and illustrated Pitstone Windmill, the original 1972 booklet. He lived at Little Coldharbour Farm, on the Ashridge Estate, near Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.Roger Hillier is a graphic designer, specialising in illustrated books. He also writes and takes photographs, and his work has been published both locally and nationally. Since moving to Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire in the early 1990s he has taken an interest in local history, particularly Pitstone Windmill, and in 2015 he co-produced a short film about Ford End Watermill.John Brandrick is a draughtsman, designer and engineer. Having spent his working life in the construction and process industries, he is now retired. Combining an interest in the mechanics of windmills and watermills and his skill as a draughtsman, he has produced an extensive catalogue of three-dimensional digital drawings of historic mills in the UK and abroad. He lives in Whitland, Carmarthenshire, South-West Wales.
