Far from being a mere countermovement to Enlightenment, Romanticism is distinguished by a sustained reflection on what constitutes knowledge and what its borders are. The nature of knowledge, whether it is an 'art' or a 'science,' whether it should be 'philosophical,' 'historical' or 'empirical,'- these issues are very much under negotiation during the Romantic period.
