Texts have been reliably transcribed from the original sources and presented with introductions, explanations and footnotes. Most of the readings expand on the narratives in Richard Crawford's "Introduction to America's Music" and "America's Musical Life: A History", making this volume a supplement to those two books and a stand-alone reader.
