The twin themes of authority and resistance are the focus of this volume, explored through topics such as landholding and secular politics, the church and religious orders and contemporary imagery and its reception. Together, thepapers combine to illustrate the variety of ways in which historians of the "long" thirteenth century are able to examine the practices and norms through which individuals and institutions sought to establish their authority, andthe ways in which these were open to challenge.

Janet Burton is Professor of Medieval History at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter and the author of many books and articles on monastic history. Ian Forrest is professor of social and religious history at the University of Oxford. RICHARD CASSIDY studied history as an undergraduate at St Catherine's College, Oxford, in the 1960s. After retirement from a career in the gas industry, he returned to history, with an MA and PhD in medieval history at King's College, London. His PhD thesis 'The 1259 Pipe Roll' is the basis for an edition of that roll to be published by the Pipe Roll Society. Since completing his doctorate in 2012, he has published several articles on thirteenth-century royal finance and administration. He has also written a book, Approaching Pipe Rolls: The Thirteenth Century, to be published by Routledge in the Approaching Medieval Sources series
