The Necronomicon – the Book of the Dead – what horrors lurk inside, whispering malevolently as the secrets try to creep out… Master of weird horror H.P. Lovecraft famously mentioned the mysterious fictional Necronomicon in some of his stories, with no more than a few cryptic references to it, and he inspired other authors, such as August Derleth, to incorporate the grimoire into their own works. Thus this notorious book, featuring arcane text and histories of the terrible gods that stalk these writers' works, has taken on a life of its own. In this exciting new book, punchy text describes how fantasy art, literature and movies have been influenced by this dangerous tome, accompanied by powerfully atmospheric artworks.

Sammy Maine (author) is a writer who has lent her skills to the likes of Computer Arts, SFX magazine and Imagine FX. When she’s not penning her thoughts about design and art, she’s attending gigs and pretending that music journalism is a career that still exists. Born in America and growing up in Turkey, London and Northampton, she now resides in Bristol. S.T. Joshi (foreword) is a leading authority on H.P. Lovecraft, as well as other writers mostly in the realms of supernatural and fantasy fiction. He is the author of The Weird Tale (1990), The Modern Weird Tale (2001), and Unutterable Horror: A History of Supernatural Fiction (2012). His award-winning biography H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996) was later expanded as I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft (2010).
