This title brings together two books - "Cheadle Coal Town" and "The Iron Valley". Large scale OS maps based on the 1879 survey of the area have been added to provide additional information beyond the collieries and ironstone mines covered in the text. The 1856 iron ore discoveries in the the Churnet valley created a "Klondyke" rush of mining, with some 750,000 tons of soft, bright red ironstone extracted in 20 years. Iron working, however, can be traced back to the 16th century Consall Forge. the coal working spanned eight centuries, ending in the 1960s.
