From the negotiations of the 1899 Anglo-Kuwait Agreement, during which Mubarak sought to outfox Lord Curzon and other British officials, to his ambitions to tame tribal politics, the author here presents a unique portrait of the man who transformed Kuwait from an Ottoman sub-province to an independent state.
Dr. Souad M. Al-Sabah graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University (1973) and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Surrey (1982). She has published several books of poetry and has established literary prizes to encourage cultural and scientific work in the Arab world. In addition to her literary contributions, she has been an important advocate for human rights and is a founding member of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, the Kuwait Human Rights Society, the Arab Council for Children and Development, and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Arab Thought Forum. Dr Souad Al-Sabah has been awarded the Kuwaiti Award of Merit in Literature and Arts; the Lebanese Golden Medal of Honour; The Arab World Institute's Shield of Honour and most recently, South Korea's Manhae Award and the Tunisian Republic Medal (2012).
