Bischof Javier Echevarría, 1932 in Madrid geboren, wurde 1955 zum Priester geweiht. Bis 1975 war er Sekretär des 2002 heilig gesprochenen Josemaría Escrivá, Gründer des Opus Dei. Nach dem Tode Alvaro del Portillos, des ersten Nachfolgers Escrivás, wurde er 1994 an die Spitze des Opus Dei gewählt. Papst Johannes Paul II. erteilte ihm im Januar 1995 die Bischofsweihe. Bischof Echevarría gehört mehreren römischen Kongregationen an. Seine geistlichen Schriften sind weltweit verbreitet.
