A study of the issues confronting not only doctors themselves, but also the families of doctors, their day-to-day experiences and how they cope or don't cope. The interview data that forms its substance includes more than 120 doctors, their spouses and their children that the authors have interviewed over 12 years of research. The book is organized in five sections, beginning with medical students, junior doctors and consultants' stress. Chapter Two focuses on specific problems experienced by general practitioners. The content of the third chapter outlines the experiences of women doctors and their family lives. In Chapter Four overseas doctors, their spouses and their children talk about their experiences which are characterized by cultural diversities. Chapter Five focuses on the experiences of non-doctor spouses and children's point of view. The final chapter reviews issues raised by the doctors, their spouses and their children. Suggestions are given to problems of different groups and the book outlines some individual and organizational stress management strategies.
