A historical and archeological guidebook to Portugal that introduces the reader and traveller to the foundations of the modern state from the earliest period down to medieval times. This work presents the reader with the important epochs in the early and formative history of the country and is guided to their in situ remains.
This unique historical and archeological guidebook to Portugal introduces the reader and traveller to the foundations of the modern state from the earliest period down to medieval times. The historical perspective is given tangible substance by the identification, description and location of historical sites that relate to the periods in question. The reader is presented with the important epochs in the early and formative history of the country and is guided to their in situ remains, which may take the form of Paleolithic rupestrian paintings, ancient Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age fortified villages, tombs (dolmens, tholos, cists), Celtic (Iron Age) settlements or castros, Roman towns, villas and necropoli, Paleo-Christian churches and cemeteries, and Moslem castles. The book can be fruitfully employed as a field manual for travellers who are inclined to see all they can of the ancient heritage and as a handy reference for those who cannot visit the sites but wish to know more of what Portugal has to offer than can be found in other guidebooks. Much of the research of James M. Anderson, Ph.D., has focused on the ancient cultures and languages of the Iberian peninsula.
He has resided in Spain and Portugal on and off for ten years and has often been sponsored by grants from the US and Canadian governments and The University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. As guide and resource person, Professor Anderson has designed and accompanied numerous adult education tours both for The University of Calgary and for the University of British Columbia.

M. Sheridan Lea, M.A., has taught English as a Second Language and Linguistics at The University of Calgary and Mount Royal College, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has resided in Spain and Portugal periodically for many years.
