Much has been written on the great actors, but the great actresses generally have been ignored. The Luminous ones traces the lives and contributions of important female figures in the history of acting from the time of ancient Rome to the twentieth-century.

The Author: Elizabeth Nash received her BFA from Columbia University and was awarded a two year Fulbright Grant to study opera in Germany. For the next ten years, she was a leading soprano in European opera houses. She then returned to the United States and earned an M.A. at Teachers College, Columbia University, followed by a Ph.D. at Indiana University. Since 1975, she has been Head of Voice Studies in the Theatre Arts Department at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Nash is the authoress of the biography Always First Class the Career of Geraldine Farrar. In addition, she has conducted master classes in New York, Boston, Chicago and Leipzig, Germany.

Contents: The Luminous ones examines representative actresses from all the major periods of western drama, commencing with Theodora and concluding with Eleonora Duse.
