Travels in Teflonia is a book about the yearning for travel and new experiences and how both come to realisation through a journey. It charts the setbacks, false dawns and triumphs that are an inextricable part of that journey.
In Travels in Teflonia Bill Roby tells the story of almost a quarter of a century teaching English in five European countries - the UK, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. His journey begins in 1986 when, angst-ridden and working in his family's textile business near Liverpool, he craves a life of travel in foreign lands and enrols on a TEFL course in an attempt to buck change. Change he certainly finds as his life takes on a 360 degree turn - getting caught up in an earthquake, finding himself in a near-war scenario, being chased in the street by a strange man - these are just some of the extraordinary circumstances that await him in his travels. He lands teaching jobs in familiar place names on the map, such as Athens, Turin and Oporto, to name but a few, where he falls in (and sometimes out) with a whole spectrum of characters, ranging from the smile-provokingly lovable to the flesh-creepingly horrible.
He gives a faithful account of his time spent teaching English to foreigners in a light-hearted and positive way, in the mythical land he calls 'Teflonia' - a place which will be only too familiar to those who have trodden the same path as him - so that, as far as is possible - the reader can partake in his Travels in Teflonia.
