Another addition to this sumptuous historical series, Historic Auckland and Northland is a beautifully produced book showcasing the history of the region through over 140 superb historic photographs, many not published before. Informative extended captions give a lively sense of richness and diversity of this region's past. "New Zealand's largest urban area began as a collection of temporary huts and tents on the foreshore, in what was known as Commercial Bay. It lay at the foot of a muddy track which ran down a gully and would soon become Queen Street." Beginning with some of the earliest photographs of Auckland, including an 1859 image of a Maori group overlooking Commercial Bay and Queen Street, the story of the region takes in familiar places and forgotten buildings, recreation and transport, farming and industry. Extended captions tell micro-stories of important events and people, significant social changes, and how those in the north of New Zealand lived, worked and played.

Richard Wolfe is a prolific author with an in depth knowledge of the region's history and photographic archives through long association with Auckland Museum. Previous books include a pictorial history of Auckland, books on Kiwiana, and Artists @ Work, with photographer Stephen Barnett.
