Written by: Rose Aravanis stumbled into English language teaching having studied something completely unrelated at university - in Rose’s case science. She started teaching in 1993 and had been fortunate enough to have worked in Greece, the UK and Australia. Since 2003, Rose has been a freelance teacher trainer and has met and trained many teachers in Greece and Cyprus both for Macmillan and on CELTA courses as a CELTA trainer. Having spent many years living and working in a very exam-oriented culture (Greece), Rose also worked extensively in language testing as an Examiner (Cambridge ESOL and IELTS), Team Leader (Cambridge ESOL) and Examiner Trainer (IELTS). As a Macmillan author, Rose has been involved in a number of exam projects, most recently Code, and has also written many components for other writers' course books. George Vassilakis has been involved in ELT in various ways since 1985. He started teaching English in a private language school in Athens, Greece, when he was still a university student. George was studying Philosophy at the time, but ended up working as an EFL teacher full time, and went on to study for a Diploma in Literature, a Diploma in Translation and an RSA Diploma in TEFL. In 1990, George started working as a teacher-trainer in a teacher-training centre in Athens - he taught on a variety of courses, including what was then the RSA Diploma course, until in 1998 he decided to go freelance. As a freelancer, he has run teacher-training seminars and courses, both pre-service and in-service, for some of the largest English language schools and school chains in Greece, and has also worked quite extensively in ESP, designing and teaching onsite courses for companies in various sectors. George has also worked as an oral examiner for the Cambridge ESOL Young Learners, KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE exams for a number of years. Since 1996, George has also been writing teaching materials for Heinemann ELT and, subsequently, Macmillan. Initially, he wrote a number of supplementary books for Greek learners to accompany coursebook series such as Apple Pie, Smile and Shine. Then came the Teacher's Book and Test Book for Rising Star and in 1999 I was commissioned to write a three-level coursebook series for young learners, which Macmillan Hellas published under the title Action in 2003. George has also been a co-author of the successful coursebook Code.
