This book is a graduate level text designed to teach the latest, evidence-based treatments for suicide. While it is intended primarily as a text, it may also be a useful reference for health care practitioners. The book discusses suicide identification, assessment, and treatment across various special populations. It also includes textbook features such as chapter objectives, vignettes, role play exercises, quizzes, case studies, and more. This book is designed to provide graduate students and health professionals with the essential knowledge in the following areas: incidence and prevalence rates of suicidal behaviors in various demographic and diagnostic groups; risk and identification of suicidal behaviors across the lifecycle (children/adolescents, adults, elderly); risk and identification of suicidal behaviors in special populations (military, LGBT, and more); and, impact and treatment of survivors of suicide.

Dana Worchel, PhD, is an assistant professor at Columbia University, School of Social Work. Dr. Worchel has a wide range of clinical experience working with individuals with mood disorders and suicidality in outpatient, inpatient, and psychiatric emergency room settings. During the past 8 years, Dr. Worchel has conducted research examining risk and protective factors across cultures related to mood disorders and suicidal behavior. Her research has also focused on the development of novel interventions aimed at improving treatment engagement and adherence among suicide attempters. As a principal investigator, Dr. Worchel has received funding for her research, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD). Dr. Worchel currently teaches clinical practice with a special focus on adult mental illness and individuals with suicidality.
