This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory of structural dynamics, highlighting practical issues and illustrating applications with a large number of worked out examples. In the spirit of 'learning by doing' it encourages readers to apply immediately these methods by means of the software provided, allowing them to become familiar with the broad field of structural dynamics in the process.

The book is primarily focused on practical applications. Earthquake resistant design is presented in a holistic manner, discussing both the underlying geophysical concepts and the latest engineering design methods and illustrated by fully worked out examples based on the newest structural codes. The spectral characteristics of turbulent wind processes and the main analysis methods in the field of structural oscillations due to wind gusts and vortex shedding are also discussed and applications illustrated by realistic examples of slender chimney structures.

The user-friendly software employed is downloadable and can be readily used by readers to tackle their own problems.

Dr.-Ing. Christoph Butenweg was born in Borken, Germany. From 1994 to 1999 he was Research assistant at the Chair of Institute of Structural Mechanics at the University Essen. In 2001 he became Senior engineer at the Institute of Structural Statics and Dynamics, RWTH Aachen University, since 2006 he has been Manager at the SDA-engineering GmbH. Since 2016 he has been a full Professor for Technical Mechanics and Structural Engineering at FH Aachen - University of Applied Sciences

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Konstantin Meskouri was born in Athens, Greece. He studied Civil Engineering in Vienna and Munich and graduated 1970 in Munich. He did his doctoral dissertation 1974 in Munich. From 1996 till 2013 he has been a full Professor for Structural Statics and Dynamics at the Civil Engineering Department of RWTH Aachen University.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-G. Hinzen was born in Hagen, Germany. He studied Geophysics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and graduated in 1979. His Doctoral dissertation was 1984 in Bochum. From 1984 to 1995 he was researcher at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, Hanover. Since 1995 he has been director of the Seismological Station Bensberg of Cologne University.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Höffer was born at Attendorn, Germany. He graduated in Civil Engineering at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum where he afterwards worked as a research assistant. In 1996 he earned his doctoral degree from his university and passed two years as a post doc researcher abroad. He gained practical experience as a project engineer and managing director of consulting offices at Düsseldorf and Bochum, Germany. In 2003 he was appointed full Professor for Wind Engineering at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
