Study of gauged brickwork. Combining diagrams and photographs with an analysis of the work, the author describes each stage in the process, from cutting and shaping the bricks to laying and carving them.
Bricks, brickwork and brick building have for centuries played an essential part in shaping both the urban and rural environment. Now with a substantial number of historic buildings requiring repair and restoration, the skills required to produce high quality decorative brickwork are becoming increasingly important. This book provides a study of gauged brickwork. By combining diagrams and photographs with an analysis of the work the author describes each stage in the process, from rubbing, cutting and shaping the bricks to laying and carving them. He also emphasizes the importance of this skill and the damage that can be done to buildings by attempts to repair or re-point rubbed and gauged brickwork. This book aims to offer architects and builders an insight into the application of gauged brickwork and it should also be of use to students and craftsmen in the field.
