The book presents formulations and examples of three-dimensional non-axisymmetric stability in viscoelastic anisotropic cylindrical shells. The most critical stability loss modes are determined by minimizing the critical loads and critical times with respect to the number of half-waves in radial as well as transverse directions.

Currently, there is no literature available on three-dimensional local buckling analysis (or localized warpage) that considers non-axisymmetric stability loss in viscoelastic cylindrical shells. The contents of this book provide the formulation for such a stability loss analysis through the framework of the three-dimensional linearized theory of stability. Additionally, as this book addresses the problem by modeling the material as a viscoelastic fibrous composite, it can be applied to carry out buckling analysis in both elastic and viscoelastic cases.

  • Guide to modelling composite viscoelastic shell elements for buckling analysis
  • Provides a framework for defining the failure criterion for viscoelastic materials
  • Course material for teaching shell buckling and viscoelastic composites

Surkay D. Akbarov

Dr. Akbarov is a full Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul since 1993. He has more than 35 years of experience in the field of mechanics of composite materials, stability loss, machine theory and dynamics, structural mechanics, fracture mechanics, and finite element methods. He has supervised more than 25 doctoral theses on both theoretical frameworks and industry applications. He is also affiliated to the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Akbarov has been listed among the world's top 2% researchers/scientists for two consecutive years by Stanford University (PLOS). For several years, he has been receiving the Highest Research Output award at Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul as well. He has written more than 300 peer reviewed articles in highly reputable and indexed journals. His work has been cited more than 4100 times and has H-Indexes of 24 (Web of Science), 26 (Scopus), and 33 (Google Scholar). Dr. Akbarov has secured multiple grants for different projects under Turkish Higher Education Commission and the Scientific and Technological Research Institution of Turkey (TÜBITAK). Prior to this work, he authored 3 monographs on mechanics of composite materials that were published by Springer.

Zafer Kutug

Dr. Kutug has been serving as an Associate Professor in the Mechanics Division at the Department of Civil Engineering, Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul since 2010. He has over 20 years of experience in teaching and research in the fields of composite materials, plate vibrations, and structural mechanics. Dr. Kutug has provided technical support to the industry on more than 50 projects in the areas of plate bending, structural cracks, retrofitting of structures, performance assessment of buildings, and earthquake damage quantification. He has supervised several postgraduate students and successfully secured funding for his projects/students.

Muhammad Yousaf Anwar

Dr. Anwar completed his PhD in structural mechanics from Yildiz Technical University. During his doctoral thesis, he worked as a guest researcher on an EU Horizon 2020 project at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany where he worked on the seismic performance and energy efficiency of a CLT (cross laminated timber) based retrofit exoskeleton for seismically deficient buildings. He has also been awarded the Scientist in Residence fellowship by the Oskar von Miller Forum, Munich, Germany. Currently, Dr. Anwar is working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Istanbul Okan University.
