A fully illustrated examination of the use of color in clay, outlining its history and exploring the styles and techniques of the leading modern makers.

Nerikomi is the use of colored clay to build a piece’s decoration into its very fabric before forming and firing. A variety of techniques including stacking, slicing and stretching the clays results in a multicolored loaf, highly patterned slices from which are used to create ceramic forms. The possibilities are endless. This beautifully illustrated introduction by accomplished nerikomi specialist Thomas Hoadley includes:

– A brief history of the origins and international styles of colored clay

– A section dedicated to the most honored Japanese Masters of nerikomi

– Stunning and highly varied examples of nerikomi work from around the world

– Step-by-step examples of many of the techniques that they employ

Whether you simply enjoy the beauty of multicolored clay or are seeking inspiration to enrich your own nerikomi project, this essential volume will reward your repeated viewing.

Thomas Hoadley apprenticed with Vermont potter Malcolm Wright, who brought Japanese Karatsu-style wood-fired pottery techniques to the United States. Hoadley later established a pottery studio in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. He holds a Special Judge’s Award from the 2011 International Ceramics Festival Mino, Japan; his work was featured at the White House in Washington D.C. and is included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts among many others.
