Introducing the state-of-the-art of hypervelocity shock tunnels, this complete reference features a variety of drivers and step-by-step introductions to their theories, physics, methods and testing. This book enables researchers and engineers in aerospace to design and improve wind tunnels that simulate flow qualities of real hypersonic flyers.
Learn to design and improve state-of-the-art aerodynamic ground testing facilities in this comprehensive reference book, with particular focus on high-enthalpy shock tunnels. Including the latest advances in detonation-driven high-enthalpy shock tunnels, readers will discover how to extend test time with brand new concepts and duplicate real hypersonic flight test conditions. Through a systematic approach, the book describes technologies for a variety of different drivers in hypersonic and high-enthalpy shock tunnels. The fundamental theories for hypersonic and high-enthalpy shock tunnels are described step-by-step, with examples throughout, providing an accessible introduction. Built on years of real-world experience, this book examines in detail the advantages and challenges of improving test flow qualities, including increasing total pressure and enthalpy, model scale amplification and test-time extending for different types of shock tunnel drivers. This is an ideal companion handbook for aerospace engineers as well as graduate students.

Zonglin Jiang is a professor of the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a Distinguished Fellow of the International Shock Wave Institute (ISWI), a Member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and an AIAA Associate Fellow. He has been internationally recognized for his universal framework of detonation initiation and propagation, the theory and technology for detonation-driven hypervelocity shock tunnels, the standing oblique detonation ramjet engine and the dispersion-controlled dissipative shock-capturing scheme, and rewarded the 2016 AIAA Ground Testing Award, the National Technology Invention Prize of China, the Outstanding Scientific and Technology Achievement Prize of CAS. Randy S. M. Chue has worked extensively in the analysis and optimization of various wind-tunnels for testing scramjets and re-entry vehicles, such as the NASA HyPulse and blowdown facilities located at GASL, at which he was the Chief Engineer for Computational Fluids. He was also an Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University and his teaching and research were focused on propulsion.
