Smart Polymers
CRC Press (Verlag)
978-1-032-22887-7 (ISBN)
This book presents the basics of smart polymers and describes their current and future applications. This book is different from other books on the subject in that it explores polymer materials’ smart behavior in more depth, covering vibration damping, thermal and electrochemical energy, sensing at trace level, biotechnology, and so on. The 14 chapters in this book cover diverse areas, including:
• Photoresponsive polymers that can be manipulated using a specific frequency of light
• Designing polymers for vibration damping
• Smart manipulations of hydrophobic and super-hydrophobic polymers
• Biopolymers, including hydrogels for smart application, drug delivery, and other uses
• Smart paints
• Self-healing and shape memory polymers
• Holography for data storage
• Phase change polymers and solid polymer electrolytes for thermal and electrochemical energy
• Molecular imprinting polymers for sub-ppm sensing and removal of unwanted materials
• Smart textiles, and the concept of advanced textiles
This book will be of particular interest to researchers, postgraduates, and industry experts. It offers an extensive introduction to the basics of smart polymers and their possible applications.
Dr.Asit Baran Samui completed Ph.D. from University of Mumbai, India in 1986. He has served as material scientist in Naval Materials Research laboratory, DRDO, India. During last several years he is engaged with teaching in various universities including the current one, Institute of Chemical Technology. He was engaged with multidisciplinary research activities in DRDO resulting in development of a range of products. The work included speciality polymers, polymers for thermal management and sub-ppt sensing, extensive studies on conducting polymers, nanoceramics and smart polymers. He was leading a group of scientists in DRDO engaged in the development of smart materials. His current teaching areas are polymers science, Nanotechnology and smart polymers. At present he is guiding students on `Phase change materials’, ‘Molecular imprinting polymers’, `Polymer composites’ and `Catalyst based pyrolysis of waste polymer’. He has about 120 publications in peer reviewed journals including several review papers and 09 Indian patents. There are about a dozen book chapters to his credit including hand book, encyclopedia across multiple publishers. He has guided successfully a dozen Ph.D students and several M.Sc. and M. Tech students. Regarding editing, he acted as guest editor for one issue of `Defence Science Journal’, India. He is also member of several journals’ editorial board.
