Gene therapy has been regarded as a great potential for specific treatment of gene-related human diseases, such as cancer, genetic and epidemic diseases. Gene therapy refers to the biomedical technology that inserts normal or therapeutic exogenous genes into target cells to repair or replace defective genes in target cells, so as to achieve the purpose of treating diseases. Efficient gene delivery systems are the crucial roles for successful implementation of gene therapy. This book provides a platform for young scholars and students to systematically understand the preparation and characterization of the existing non-viral gene delivery systems, as well as providing a technology platform for clinical gene therapy

Prof. Huayu Tian was graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology to get his Bachelor degree (1990), Master degree (1993) and was graduated from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences to get his Ph.D. degree of Polymer Chemistry and Physics (2006). From 2006 to 2012, he worked in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry as an assistant professor and an associate professor. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Utah from 2009 to 2010. He was appointed as a full professor of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry in 2012. He is a principal investigator of some national projects such as the Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars of China. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and more than 30 patents. His research interests include biodegradable polycation for gene carriers, targeting improvement for polymeric gene carriers, intelligent shielding system for polymer gene carriers, anti-tumor treatment using polymeric gene carriers, pulmonary drug and gene delivery system for lung diseases treatment. Prof. Xuesi Chen received his Ph.D. from the department of polymer chemistry, Waseda University in 1988. After postdoctoral training at the department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years, he returned to Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry in June 1999 served as a researcher, doctoral supervisor. He is the vice director of the academic committee of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was awarded as the National Science Found for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2004. He was the recipient of the "Ten-thousand Talents Program" and the Science and Technology Innovation & Entrepreneurship Talents in 2013. He has been elected to be the Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering in 2016. His current work centers on biodegradable and biomedical polymer materials, especially in the fields of polylactic acid green plastics, fracture internal fixation, tissue engineering, the anticancer nanocarriers and hydrogels with functional properties for drug release. He has authored or co-authored more than 700 papers with an H-index of 77 (total citations more than 20,000 times). He is also the inventor or co-inventor of 248 Chinese and 1US authorized patents. Currently he is one of the board members of Advanced Healthcare Materials, Journal of Controlled Release, Biomacromolecules, Acta Biamaterialia, Polymer Chemistry and Macromolecular Bioscience, Chinese Journal of Polymer Science, Chemical Journal of Chinese Universities and Chemical Research in Chinese Universities and so on.
