A textbook on commercial contracts related to shipping. The approach adopted by this text is to address sale, finance and carriage contracts as a single commercial transaction by focusing on the bill of lading.
This book examines those legal principles of English law which govern the use of bills of lading in international trade. Traditionally dealt with in books covering the law of carriage of goods by sea, bills of lading are here examined in the context of the contract or sale of goods and of the contract setting up a letter of credit. Emphasis is placed upon the tender of bills of lading by sellers to buyers and bankers.

Documentary sales on shipment terms; an introduction to contracts and duties in international sales. Part 1 Possession, property and title to sue: the bill of lading as a document of title; title to sue the carrier; transfer of property and of risk. Part 2 Documentary duties - a bill acceptable to buyers and banks; qualities of the bill of lading as a receipt; qualities of the bill of lading as a contract; bills of lading under charter parties. Part 3 Rejection of documents and rejection of goods.
