Addressing a broad range of theoretical, experimental and clinical aspects of atopic allergy, this work aims to provide a comprehensive review of the role of genetic and environmental factors in such diseases as hay fever, asthma, eczema and certain types of food intolerance.
The editors have assembled the work of experts to address a broad range of theoretical, experimental and clinical aspects of atopic allergy. Areas covered include a historical introduction to the subject; a tabulation of the physiochemical properties of most of the well characterized purified allergens; a survey of allergic sensitivity and a review of environmental and developmental factors in atopic disease which focuses on early childhood. The five final chapters assess current research on the human immune system and human susceptibility to immunologic disease.

Preface, David G.Marsh and Malcolm N.Blumenthal; historical introduction, David G.Marsh; population selection and methods of evaluating immunologic responses to allergens, Malcolm N.Blumenthal; allergens and allergen nomenclature, David G.Marsh; the relevance of allergen standardization and purity to epidemiologic and genetic studies of immune responses to allergens, Marianne Roebber; epidemiology of atopic allergy, Linda R. Freidhoff; addendum - prevalence of percutaneous immediate hypersensitivity and histamine reactivity in the US population - data from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Peter J. Gergen and Paul C.Turkeltaub; environmental and developmental factors in allergic disease in infancy and early childhood, Bengt Bjorksten and John W.Gerrard; immunogenetic and immunochemical factors determining immune responsiveness to allergens - studies in unrelated subjects, David G. Marsh; genetic control of IgE antibody responses in man - the Amb V (Ra5) model, Kelsye Coulter et al; immunogenetics of specific immune responses to allergens in twins and families, Malcolm N.Blumenthal and Sergio Bonini; genetic aspects of bronchial hypereactivity, Russell J.Hopp et al; the role of genetic and environmental factors in the control of Basophil and mast cell releasability, Gianni Marone et al; family analysis and genetic counselling for allergic diseases.
