A dissertation dealing with dynamic binaural synthesis, a technology of virtual acoustics.
Twenty years of research in dynamic binaural synthesis have proven this technology a serious approach towards true-to-live audio rendering. However, still a number of questions remain: How close to reality is binaural simulation today? What pitfalls – qualitatively and quantitatively – are associated with achieving true perceptual transparency, and how can they be solved? What are the future perspectives of this promising technology?
In order to answer these questions at least partly, this doctoral dissertation gathers a number of scientific publications devoted to the description of the state of the art of dynamic binaural synthesis today, to its continued technical improvement and to the perceptual evaluation of the achieved progress.

Dr. rer. nat. Alexander Lindau is a research associate at the Audio Communication Group of the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. Mr. Lindau has published more than 40 conference papers, journal articles and book chapters and is reviewer for AES, EAA, IEEE, Psychomusicology, and Springer Science publishers. Currently, he is with the DFG research unit SEACEN (Simulation and Evaluation of Acoustical Environments) focusing on new approaches towards the perceptual evaluation of spatial audio technologies.
