This book explores the relationship between sustainability, culture and the shaping of human surroundings by asking what is the significance and potential of design as a tool for the creation of a sustainable development.
As culture is becoming increasingly recognised as a precondition for and crucial element of sustainable development, design has emerged as a key aspect of culture’s impact. The discipline’s cultural platform, humanistic intentions, multidisciplinary approach and practical goals offer important lessons for sustainability scholars from the natural and social sciences.
The contributors to this volume draw on interdisciplinary case studies and investigations from Europe, North America, and India to explore the role of design in sustainable development, examining both product and urban design.
This book will appeal to researchers as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students in design and design literacy, crafts, architecture and environmental planning, but also scholars of sustainability from other disciplines who wish to understand the role and impact of design and culture in sustainable development.
