lt;p>This book describes the development of immigrants in an Akha village in northern Thailand and discusses issues such as coffee economy, ethnic relations, religious beliefs and cultural changes. On the basis of in-depth analysis and understanding of the social structure and cultural logic of the villages in the region, the author points out that the local peoples in mountains have adapted the tension between tradition and modernity with their unique social and cultural logic and creatively integrated into modern society. When dealing with the relationship between the state and the local, the peoples do not always choose to escape from the rule. They often get more development opportunities by trying to participate in the process of nationalization.
